Are you eager to build your teaching career in the dynamic, vibrant and multicultural hub of Asia – Hong Kong? Teaching English as a Native-English Speaking Teacher (NET) in Hong Kong is brimming with opportunities, BUT wading through the application process is a total head-scratcher to say the least!
There are 2 main ways to pursue a NET position in Hong Kong:
- Direct Application
- Apply directly to schools.
- Recruitment Agency
- Work with a specialist recruitment agency that focuses on school placement.
The application grind might seem daunting at the start, regardless of your choice to go direct or via an agency. Knowing your options is how you will sail through this with zero stress! In this post, we shall break down all the pros and cons.
Table of Contents
What is Direct Application?
Direct application means submitting your application directly to the schools. Your resume will be received, reviewed and considered by the schools. The school will contact you should your application is selected to move forward.
What is Via Recruitment Agency?
A recruitment agency acts as an intermediary, matching candidates with schools. Positions include those under the NET Grant and non-NET Grant.
To be helpful for international applicants unfamiliar with local processes, agency could provide:
- Guidance on applications
- Visa application
- Interview preparation
- Training and appraisal
Both paths lead to rewarding teaching careers, but they differ in terms of control, support, and complexity. This blog explores the advantages and challenges of each approach to help you decide the best fit for your circumstances.
Simple Guide to the NET Grant
Starting from the 2025/26 school year, eligible aided schools (including special schools) and caput schools in Hong Kong can choose to:
- Keep the traditional NET post, or
- Receive a new NET Grant – an annual funding to support schools to build an English-rich environment
Given that the NET Scheme is being revamped and replaced by the NET Grant, NETs who seek NET Grant teaching positions should obtain the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in any subject (from a Hong Kong university or equivalent); and
- a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign / Second Language (TEFL / TESL) or a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or equivalent; and
- Valid IELTS Academic result (overall band score of 7.5 or above, with “Speaking” band score of 7.5 or above)
Many schools apply for the NET Grant and look to fill their teaching positions through specialist agencies. Recruitment agencies often have strong network with schools, access to unadvertised vacancies, and conduct tailor-matching based on schools’ and NETs’ preferences.
